APCO’s Smart Neighborhood is located in Birmingham, AL and is comprised of 62 advanced homes featuring 35% more energy efficiencies than traditional homes utilizing the latest in smart grid and automation technologies. The Smart Neighborhood is connected to a Microgrid, powered by solar panels, battery storage and a backup natural gas generator. APCO collaborated and partnered with EPRI, DOE, Southern Co, Signature Homes, Carrier, Rheem, and Vivint, in order to complete the project.
